To the average lay-person in the West, acupuncture and Chinese medicine are little understood and often exoticized.

People commonly know acupuncture involves needling the body, that it treats pain, and that it’s been used in China for hundreds of years.

What’s less commonly known is what acupuncture is able to treat, and how different diseases or illnesses are understood by Chinese medicine.

Below is a general list of conditions acupuncturists learn to treat over the course of their education. This list may appear extensive, and it is, but it is by no means exhaustive. It’s important to know that the conditions listed below are not western biomedical conditions but are Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diseases. There is often overlap with western medical conditions of the same name, but how these conditions are understood and treated differs.

It’s also important to bear in mind that as with western biomedical illnesses and their treatment, certain conditions are more difficult to treat than others, and that in many cases treatment is more accurately understood as the management of the condition rather than a “cure.” Improvements can be remarkable, but there is no magic here.
