Moxibustion involves the burning of a herb called moxa (aka Mugwort or Artemisia vulgaris) over or near specific acupuncture points. Moxa can be a very powerful method in itself to add warming and nourishing energy into the body, and to activate specific points. Most patients find moxa treatment to be highly relaxing and hypo-allergenic.
Moxa has gone hand in hand with acupuncture for thousands of years; in fact, the Mandarin word that we translate as just ‘acupuncture’ more accurately means ‘acupuncture and moxibustion’. The two therapies are truly inseparable.
Acupuncturists use moxibustion to warm specific acupuncture points and channels to relieve pain, nourish the body, and move Qi and blood. Moxibustion is used to treat everything from menstrual disorders, to poor digestion, to arthritis and hair loss.
